Why is it so hard to get rid of bed bugs?

The bed bug is a parasite closely linked to humans.

  • It is gregarious and nocturnal.
  • It avoids any light source; artificial or natural.
  • Climbs well on smooth surfaces but does not hold well on ceiling.
  • Can live up to 18 months without taking any blood meal.
  • Bed bug detect its host by body temperature, carbon diaoxide and vibrations.
  • It can stop blood feeding and hide in a crack for 3 months when it feels threatened by strong detergent, disinfectant or spray. Do not use such products, it can spread and worsen the infestation and make it last much longer.
  • Bed bug can resist temperatures as low as -15C in furnitures stored in a garage.
  • The bed bug has 5 growing stages.
  • It bites every 3-7 days.
  • It lives an average of 5 months but can live up to 18 months in some cases.
  • The female lays 2-4 eggs per day, 200-500 in its lifetime.
  • It prefers wood, plastic and fabrics when they hide.
  • It prefers better the box springs compare to the mattress.
